After pussyfooting and pressure (https://kubwaexpress.com/2022/07/03/two-months-after-cancelled-spidel-sokoto-conference-lawyers-express-concern-demand-refund/) mounted on Monday Ubani, Esq Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law(SPIDEL), SPIDEL has announced that it’s canceled Annual Conference 2022 scheduled to hold in Sokoto, will now hold in Abuja between 3-5th August 2022.
Annual SPIDEL Conference 2022, was canceled as a result of insecurity after the murder of Deborah Samuel Yakubu, a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto.
On May 12, 2022, Deborah was forcefully dragged out from the security booth where she was hiding, lynched, stoned and burnt to death by her fellow students, who accused her of posting comments criticizing the religion-related posts that Muslim classmates discussed in the study group she believed should have been reserved for academic purposes.
Against the backdrop of the insecurity and outcry by Nigerians against this murder and threat by lawyers not to attend the Annual SPIDEL Conference Sokoto 22-26 May, 2022.
According to a press statement by NBA, issued on May 17, the NBA President, said, “I have approved, that the 2022 NBA-SPIDEL Annual Conference be postponed not only for the safety of our conferees and guests, but as a mark of respect for the memory of the slain Miss Deborah Yakubu.”
