The abduction of our colleague, Isyaku M. Danjuma, Esq., a member of the NBA Birnin Kebbi Branch, who was kidnapped in the early hours of October 1, 2025, around Ibeto town in Magama Local Government Area of Niger State is a painful reminder that insecurity has become a daily reality for Nigerians.
This is a sad reminder of the worsening state of insecurity across our nation, where no citizen, whether a lawyer, student, trader, or farmer, is safe on our highways, in their homes, or in their places of work.
Mr. Danjuma is not just a lawyer; he is a husband, a father, a son, and a citizen whose rights to life, liberty, and dignity are guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution (as amended). His abduction is a gross violation of these rights, an affront to the rule of law, and yet another tragic testimony to the unchecked reign of criminality and violence in our society.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) demands the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Danjuma. We call on the Federal Government, the Niger State Government, and all relevant security agencies to swing into urgent and coordinated action to rescue him without delay. We further demand that the perpetrators of this heinous crime be tracked, arrested, and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. This incident once again underscores the failure of our security architecture to protect Nigerians from the menace of kidnapping, which has now become a national plague. If lawyers, who are sworn to defend the rule of law, can be brazenly abducted on our highways, then the ordinary Nigerian is left even more vulnerable.
The NBA will continue to monitor this matter closely and will not relent in demanding accountability from those charged with securing our lives and property. Nigeria cannot claim to be a democracy governed by law if her citizens live daily in fear of abduction and death.
We stand in solidarity with the family of Mr. Danjuma, the Birnin Kebbi Branch, and the entire Bar in this trying moment, and pray for the release of our dear colleague, Mr. Danjuma.
Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN.
President, Nigerian Bar Association
