Firstly, I am grateful to God Almighty for His mercies and Faithfulness to us at the Law Week Planning Committee and to our respective families. The preceding months, weeks and days of planning have been painstaking and arduous. But thanks be to God for His sustenance.
I am equally grateful and humbled by the confidence the Branch has reposed in us, by appointing us into the Committee to serve. It remains our honour and privilege to serve in this capacity. I therefore, on behalf of the other Committee Members, thank the leadership of the Branch for this honour.
Secondly, I want to assure our members that as a team, the Committee has labored tirelessly in ensuring that we put together a memorable Law Week programme for all participants. In so doing, we encountered several challenges, chief of which is an upsurge in the cost of goods and services across all sectors of our economy.
This challenge has lightened our original plan of a serving our members with a rich, robust and sumptuous Law Week in terms of entertainment and other socials.
However, the educational content of the Law Week remains solid, rich, unassailable, academically nourishing and intellectually stimulating. This we have done, within the confines of our circumstances and resources. The lineup of resource persons is unbeatable.
Armed with both academic knowledge and industry experience to do justice to the session topics put up for discourse. I urge all participants to take advantage of these resources). This year’s theme “A Vibrant Bar: A Panacea Towards Good Governance and Sustainable Development” is both a reminder and a wake-up call to lawyers and the Bar in general. If lawyers sit idly and watch society degenerate from a state ruled by law to a state where laws are observed in breach, then, we would all fall into the Thomas Hobbesian state of nature where life is short, harsh and brutish. Therefore, it is not only necessary, but fundamental for the Bar to rise up to the occasion in pointing the ruling class to the tenets of good governance, which will in turn produce development. It is this objective we seek to achieve through this event.
I thank all our resource persons for accepting and honouring our invitation, despite their very busy and crowded schedules, especially in this post-election litigation season, where most lawyers are busy. I thank all our partners and sponsors for their support and generosity.
I specially thank my fellow committee members for their labour, love and sacrifices.
I am indeed impressed by the quality of work done in making this event successful. I thank you dear colleagues. May the good Lord reward us all.
I wish all participants, rich and refreshing learning.
