The Nigerian Socialist-Marxist groups, Labour Movement have been plunged into mourning following the death of Comrade Abiodun Aremu, fondly called Aremson. He was hit by a vehicle as he tried crossing to his house, along Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.
According to Comrade Ralph Gabin, Aremson is a committed Pan-Africanist, firmly believed that Africa must be liberated from all forms of neo-colonial influence and Western prejudice. He was an Apostle of Amílcar Cabral, advocating that true liberation begins in the minds of the people and is sustained through conscious revolutionary practice. He also lent his intellectual and moral support to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), consistently identifying with their struggle for a better and accessible public education system in Nigeria. His solidarity with ASUU reflected his understanding that the battle for workers’ rights is inseparable from the fight for quality education and national development.I shall deeply miss his mentorship, camaraderie, and ideological clarity. Lest I forget, I count myself privileged to have benefited immensely from his tutelage as a cadre trade unionist. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of activists and working-class organizers who believe, as he did, that another Nigeria and indeed another Africa is possible.
Farewell, Comrade Aremson. Your struggle lives on in the hearts and actions of all who still dare to dream of a free, just, and humane society. Rest in power!“Comrade Aremu will be interred on Thursday, 23rd October, 2025 at Number 30, Kabiru Fatoye Street, Opposite Alaka Field, Ijako Sugar Bus Stop, Ifo Road, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
