The primary responsibility of NBA, is welfare of her members. While this should not foreclose her from attending to other national issues and indigent/oppressed one, welfare of members at all things, must be prioritised.
I sympathise with the entire citizens of Borno state over the flood that has driven them into unimaginable hardship. The federal government, has set up relief scheme to reach the citizens.
Against this backdrop, I call on NBA Branches in Borno state to make sure that the relief materials brought into the state, reach all lawyers affected by the flood.
I furthermore, call on NBA national through the office of the Welfare Secretary, to immediately release 10% of 2024-2025 BPF paid by Branches in Borno (if the previous administration didn’t.) and clearly mark it; FOR WELFARE OF MEMBERS AFFECTED BY THE FLOOD.
If the previous administration had, I appeal to the incumbent administration, the leadership of PROACTIVE BAR, to act proactively and send relief materials to NBA members affected. We need not wait for contributions from well meaning members of the Bar.
NBA should by whatever means legitimate, mop up money within the next 1 week and send the Welfare Secretary to Borno, yoked with relief materials to our colleagues, as first aid, while we wait for the donations that are being contributed via: NBA North-East Support Account:
