Tobenna calls for transparency.
Tobenna Erojikwe, Esq., one of the presidential candidates in the forthcoming NBA Election scheduled to hold on July 20th, has raised alarm over the failure of the Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA), to abide by the constitutional provision of the NBA.
He disclosed this in a letter dated 8th June and addressed to the ECNBA Chairman. Mr. Erojikwe states, “Secondly, the ECNBA also is mandated to publish a full list of the members of the NBA eligible to vote no less than forty-five days before the Election. Paragraph 9 of Part IV of the Second Schedule to NBA Constitution provides thus: “the full list of the members of the Association qualified to vote shall be published by the ECNBA at least forty-five (45) clear days before the date of the election. Again, counting from the tentative date of the Election, this requirement ought to have been fulfilled no later than 5 June 2024.”
At press time, the ECNBA has not complied with this provision. This becomes worrisome and questions the integrity of the process and the questions the disqualification of candidate by ECNBA based on candidates not meeting constitutional requirements.
Failure to meet this constitutional requirement according to Mr. Erojikwe, “means that a crucial requirement for the conduct of the Election remain unfulfilled and casts a shadow of doubt o the preparedness of the ECNBA to credibly conduct the Election.” Furthermore, a closer look at the subheadings of the 123 Million Naira budget approved at Yola NEC for ECNBA to conduct the election, will reveal that ECNBA merely padded the budget with items, activities and programs that it cannot carry out effectively within the remaining days to the July 20th Election.Mr. Erojikwe also called on the ECNBA to: allow c candidates and stakeholders to scrutinise the integrity of the process and platform chosen by ECNBA to conduct the election.
