The Eagle, NBA & 2024 AGC Fees

                                          EDITORIAL

We carefully listened to YC Maikyau OON, SAN at the unveiling of the logo and theme of the 2024 AGC.
He took time to explain the characteristics of an eagle. Particularly, how an eagle plunges into a storm, soaring above it and glide majestically. The other attributes of the eagle he explained like a Nat Geo Wild narrator, were in order only that he missed this one-an eagle and a vulture are of the same diurnal bird family. The eagle metaphor as a leadership style, was not lost on us and this was reinforced in Yola, during the now infamous NEC Meeting.
If you understand the eagle and understand YC’s leadership style, you will know that YC doesn’t shy away from a fight or bow to threats, particularly, when he had been armed by resolution of NEC.
This played out in Jos when the SPIDEL brouhaha was the rave of the moment.
Before Jos NEC, was AGM in Abuja. He rode the storm, like an eagle.
A takeaway from these is simple, appealing to YC to change the NEC approved 2024 AGC Registration fees, is like a water poured on the back of a duck.Stop catching cruise and chasing clout by calling on YC to rescind NEC Restrictions. He has no such powers.
Read your NBA Constitution and find what should be done by members to summon AGM; for as it stands, only AGM, can over rule Yola NEC resolutions.
The appropriate quarters to channel your appeal, is to your  NEC representatives, comprising of your Branch Chairmen and Secretaries. They were part and parcel of that resolution; there are fears, they will replicate same in their branches, during their Law Week.
These NEC Members, should get requisite signatures from their members, co-NEC members and force the Exco, to call emergency NEC to review Yola.
But in the presence of daily inflation, what registration fees, will you prescribe?
Another quarter, is the Executives of NBA. They were elected individually and made campaign promises to lawyers, the electorate. We dare say, increasing lawyers burden, was not why lawyers voted them. Did they not reason together over these fees, when it was first brought to them before Yola?
Can Exco in council not over vote the President on issues that will impact hardship on lawyers?
This is another election year in NBA, over 89% of NBA Branches, will be electing officials, who will form the bulk of NBA NEC 2024-2026, the ball is in your court, to vote in candidates that will give you a robust NEC, where quality debates will be carried out on issues and not the current “Adopted” choristers, many have opined that NEC had turned it.
A vibrant NBA NEC, begins with the quality of leaders you elect in your local Branch.
