NBA Officials Mutiny & YC’s Counter Offensive

The 63rd AGC of the NBA, ended with anticipated excitement.
Once notice of agenda of the AGM was sent out, with amendment to the NBA Constitution inserted, seasoned Bar men knew that fireworks if in the horizon. The mobilization by Branches against the proposed amendment, was another keg of dry gunpowder. The mutiny by the officers of the Bar, namely the 2nd Vice President, 3rd Vice President and Treasurer, didn’t take me by surprise.

At the Lagos AGM before the YC Maikyau led Exco was sworn in(see the sitting position)

From the first day they were sworn in at AGM in Lagos, crisis started. The first was led by the 2nd Vice President, over the sitting arrangement. He insisted that he must sit closest to the president ahead of the General Secretary. I was there, I witnessed it.
Their 1st Exco meeting had fireworks. Some of the Exco members, were not political allies of YC Maikyau in the course of the campaign.
They had preferred candidate, who didn’t win. Like a worm, they started eating the administration from within.
The issue of official car and plate number, also became an issue. Who should own and be driven in NBA 02? The First Vice President or the General Secretary?
Another pointer, was the first NEC meeting of this administration. The NEC resolution was signed by the President and the Assistant General Secretary. The General Secretary was miraculously missing in action to sign co-sign the resolution.
Before this AGM, most of the Exco members, had taken to Social Media, to castigate and denounce the NBA President.
So the mutiny of 31st August, had been brewing and wasn’t a surprise to me. The Exco is Fuji House of Commotion.
YC’s Counter Offensive YC Maikyau, OON, SAN had the final twist of the dagger and he thrusted it deep, with fatal pints of blood gushing.
He accused his co-officers of being only interested in devising means to “chop” lawyers BPE. That they had approached him to use the Bar’s funds to sponsor their frolics.
That his resistance to their inordinate financial requests, was why they ganged up against him. He accused them of wanting to share N40,000,000 (Forty Million Naira) meant for the NBA and he resisted. He further accused them of coming to the National with sole intention of coming to “chop” the Bar’s money.
I begin to reason, why should a national officer be interested in only chopping money?
Yes, these national officers, spent a lot of money during campaign around the over 125 NBA Branches; they placed adverts, goodwill messages in Law Week Brochures of Branches; held hangouts and in some cases, paid BPF for colleagues all in a bid to win election. If they did this, will it be far fetched to want to lick small oil from the BPF of same lawyers, who didn’t pity them when they were campaigning? Mind you, serving the Bar, affects one’s practice and I guess these officers, merely wanted palliatives after abandoning their practice to junket around in the service of the Bar.
Could the 3 Exco members  accusation that YC doesn’t allow them to function, streams from the fact that YC visits prominent politicians without most of the Exco tagging along to get exposure? Few days to the AGC, YC visited the Villa, had a photo session with Nigeria’s president, no NBA Exco member, was part of that visit. They also complained that they had no seats for them close to the VIPs at the Opening Ceremony of the AGC.
Could this be the last stroke that broke the camel’s back and the gunpowder ignited at AGM?
Now that the mad man has picked moi-moi leaf in the Orie Nwinyi, there is no more cure. The Centre cannot hold as no amount of glue, will seal the broken ego of both YC and the 3 mutineers. The next one year will be rough but the situation can be salvaged. If I were the mutineers, I will adopt the footballer’s approach, when he has lost favor with his coach or team management. I will seek for transfer instead of being bench at every game. But will they or will they seek for bloggers through whom they will fart out damaging reports about their team?
