Senator Godswill Akpabio, former governor of Akwa Ibom State and immediate past Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, has been elected as the president for the 10th Senate.
Sen. Akpabio polled 63 votes to defeat his rival, Sen. Abdulaziz Yari, former governor of Zamfara State, who secured 46 votes.
Sen. Akpabio was immediately sworn-in after he was announced winner of the election.
Sen. Akpabio will be the 9th president of the Senate since the beginning of the Fourth Republic. Senator Barau Jibrin, representing Kano North, also emerged unopposed as the deputy senate president.
