I have been away from the Branch, minding my business, consulting other branches whether I should contest for Publicity Secretary NBA National or not.
But being away, doesn’t mean I am not in touch with happenings in my home Branch, NBA Bwari.
The law week has been going on smoothly until yesterday, Wednesday’s session, when Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN spoke truth to the Branch. This truth, I learnt, did not go down well with the Chairman, Monday Ajeh.
Truth is, truth Mazi Afam told, is the truth known to the Branch and elders of the Branch cannot deny it.
NBA Bwari from inception, adopted zoning, to make all parts of Nigeria feel welcomed to aspire and become all he or she can be in NBA Bwari.
It was this inclusion policy that is making it possible for any Tom, Dick & Hairy…to come to NBA Bwari and in less than 5 years, depending on the zone, can become Chairman.
2023 Election of NBA Bwari, contrary to age long zoning, has jettisoned zoning by allowing two Easterners, to contest for the post of the Vice Chairman, which is zoned to the West.
Supporters of these candidates, argue that, zoning is not in the Bye Law.
But what they have also failed to admit, is that 80% of the provisions in the NBA Bwari Electoral Guidelines, are not in the Bye Law.
If we run by the Electoral Guidelines, Paul Daudu, although unopposed, is not qualified to contest as his two nominators are not from the North, hence not as qualified as he is, to present himself for the office of the Chairman.
This also applies to Chinyere Moneme, who is going for the office of Secretary.
We have obtained the nomination forms of this duo and truly believe it that both Paul Daudu and Chinyere Moneme were nominated by nominators not as qualified as they are.
Why are they still in the race but the Electoral Committee disqualified Rex, whose nominator did not pay Welfare Levy? Was Rex the person in default? Is payment of Welfare Dues part of the Bye Law conditions for Eligibility to vote or be voted for?
If we must apply the Bye-Law, let us apply it strictly without bending it. We cannot insist that there is no zoning in the Bye Law, yet some offices have been reserved to some zones and only lawyers from such zone, are contesting it.
