Despite spirited efforts by some elders of the NBA Bwari to navigate the Branch from looming crisis, the Electoral Committee without regard to the tradition of inclusion in the Branch, has refused to clear Hajarat Titilope Gbolagade the only South West Candidate for the post of Vice Chairman.
The two candidates from South East cleared are Maxwell Opara Chibuike and Dimgba Chidi Jude.
The existing tradition based on principle of inclusion, equity and fairness is, in an election circle, wherein the Chairman is zoned to the North, the Vice Chair, is Zoned to the West and Secretary to the East. This convention has been largely responsible for the peace, cohesion enjoyed by NBA Bwari to the envy of other branches during and after election.
Many elders and members of the Branch has warned that this dangerous development, if allowed to be birthed, is herald the beginning of crisis in NBA Bwari.
One of the founding members of the Branch, pleading anonymity states, “The tradition in our Bar is that Chairman, Vice Chairman and Secretary are zoned to represent the three major Nigeria Regions in the NBA Bwari Branch executive each two years tenure.
This is the tradition lay down by the founding fathers of this branch and this present Exco benefited from it but want to destroy this equitable and reasonable decisions of the founding fathers.
The office of Chairman is to be zoned to the North, Secretary zoned to the East while Vice Chairman is to be zoned to the Western Region in this year’s election.
We must rise against any other region contesting against this arrangement.
Therefore the electoral committee was wrong in qualifying the two contestants from Eastern region to contest the office of vice chairman zoned to the West.
We must be careful not create unnecessary crises in this branch any longer. The Exco and Electoral committee should ask questions. The argument that it is not in the bye laws is just crises in nature because that of Chairman and Secretary is also not in the bye laws.
