Since the emergence of Akorede Habeeb Lawal, as the Publicity Secretary of NBA, I have never flinched in supporting him. I am a firm believer that after election, one must give his best to the newly elected Exco and give them time to perform. Against this backdrop, I was taken aback when less than a month into their tenure, his people started telling me they want to succeed him. It was too early to start campaigning, was my default reply.
I thought the agitation had died down but to my surprise, it became more noisy at the just concluded Kebbi NEC meeting and reechoed at the First Quarterly EBF Meeting for 2023 in Uyo. Beyond calls and SMS, I was confronted with direct questions thrust at me; “Are you contesting again?” Don’t come out late and think we will support you.” Hmmm!!
I may forgive presidential aspirants jostling early as they have a wide constituency to cover. 3 of them had “consulted me” and wants my vote, I guess they had done same to you. But I am yet to fathom why other aspirants should start campaigning (consulting), 15 months to Election.
Without my expressing intent yet, friends of one aspirant for the post of Publicity Secretary, approached me and asked that I should not contest but allow him to.
In Abakiliki last year, a similar indecent proposal was made to me. I outrightly replied that, it is too early to start talking about 2024 NBA Election, when YC is yet to balance as NBA President. Has he now balanced enough for us to start jostling for posts?
I overheard someone in the bus, on our way to Sokoto airport from Kebbi, campaigning that he is interested in 2030 Presidential Election, when it would be zoned to South East. And this dud is in the current executive. Will such a person give his best to his Exco to succeed?
To all those who have my interest at heart and wished I should start early to consult, I assure you, I will start after Habeeb’s one year in office. I owe it to him to support his tenure and by extension that of YC Maikyau OON, SAN. If it pleases my God to preserve me till after Mazi Afam Osigwe had delivered a successful AGC, with materials delivered on time, I will look into my crystal ball as to see, if I dare, will my nominator’s receipt go missing again.
For now, let’s join hands to make YC’s tenure a success.
