A colleague in Lagos sent me a picture that jolted me with awake. She wanted to know my take on it.

The picture is attached.
I thought the poster of such picture, may be acting of mischief and I undertook to visit my library and consult hard copy of Penal Code.

Shame just took over me.

The picture is true. https://www.equalitynow.org/discriminatory_law/northern_nigeria_the_penal_code/

Under Section 55 of the Penal Code (applicable in the North), you can legitimately beat your wife in Northern Nigeria, Abuja inclusive; in fact in all the following states; Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara and Abuja.

NBA, FIDA, Gender Equality NGOs and men who claim to be woke, should join in the advocacy to get this obnoxious, offensive law yanked out.

This section offends the Constitutional (Section 34), rights of dignity of a person and to the extent of its inconsistency with the Constitution, it should not operate or given any judicial backing except a judicial pronouncement that it is a dead section.
