Mpape, a quarry settlement, just a shouting distance from highbrow Maitama district Abuja, was on Sunday, September 22, invading by armed men suspected to be bandits.
During the attack, at Tipper Garage section of the settlement, the bandits killed the mosque’s Imam, Ahmad Maidara, and abducted one Alhaji Salisu Danfulani.
Nasiru Ahmad, a resident told newsmen that the assailants ambushed the Imam as he attempted to flee and was shot dead at the scene. Another member of the garage was also shot in the hand and rushed to the hospital, where he received treatment.
The attack occurred around 8 p.m. as members of the garage were leaving the mosque after performing the final prayer of the day.
The bandits, who reportedly arrived via the mountainous terrain near the garage, fled the area through the same route after the attack.
Comrade Hamza Muhammad, National President of the Nigeria Union of Mine Workers (NUMW), confirmed the incident and said the deceased Imam’s body was taken to his residence in Gwagwa town, Abuja, where he was buried the following day, in accordance with Islamic rites.
Mpape, is a highly populated area with a distinctive terrain. It is connected to Kubwaexpress Road, by a long, twisting, narrow road that is mountainous and overlooks a large rocky area where granite has long been exploited by construction companies.
